Unit 7CO03: Business Research in People Practice represents the capstone empirical project of the Level 7 Advanced Diploma. Consisting of a research proposal and a formal 7,000 to 8,000-word dissertation report, it assesses your capacity to design, execute, and analyze independent workplace research.
The 5 Core Stages of the 7CO03 Project
1. Selecting a High-Impact Research Topic
Choose a live organizational problem with strategic significance (e.g., "Evaluating the Impact of Hybrid Work Models on Employee Retention in Financial Services" or "Addressing Gender Pay Disparities through Strategic Reward Structures").
2. Formulating Research Questions & Objectives
Develop 3 to 4 SMART research objectives that balance theoretical exploration with empirical inquiry.
3. Critical Literature Review
Synthesize 35–50 peer-reviewed sources, identifying gaps in current academic knowledge and establishing your conceptual framework.
Research Philosophy & Methodology (Saunders' Research Onion):
• Philosophy: Justify your ontological and epistemological position (e.g. Positivism vs Interpretivism / Pragmatism).
• Approach: Deductive hypothesis testing vs Inductive thematic exploration.
• Strategy: Case study, mixed-methods survey, or qualitative semi-structured interviews.
• Ethics: GDPR compliance, informed consent, and data anonymization protocols.
4. Primary & Secondary Data Analysis
Apply rigorous thematic analysis (for interview transcripts) or descriptive/inferential statistics (for quantitative surveys) using tables and charts.
5. Strategic Business Recommendations & Cost-Benefit Analysis
Translate research insights into an executive action plan with estimated cost implications, timelines, risk registers, and evaluation metrics.
